En man kör på en 14-årig pojke som dör ögonblickligen. Det är mörkt och regnigt och mannen smiter från olycksplatsen. Ett misstag som han bittert får ångra och som förändrar hela hans liv. För Van Veeteren blir det ett fall som drabbar honom personligt, ett fall som kostar honom en av sina käraste... Helt plötsligt slås allt i spillror när polisstationen i Maardam får ett larm om en upphittad kropp. Kriminalinspektörerna Moreno och Münster anländer till mordplatsen och känner genast igen liket – det blir Münster som får det tunga uppdraget att meddela sin före detta chef, Van Veeteren, att han mist sin ende son. När den första chocken och sorgen har lagt sig finns det ingen som kan hindra Van Veeteren från att delta i mordutredningen. Hans inblandning sätter relationen till forna kollegor på prov, i synnerhet då utredningen visar en bild av Erich som Van Veeteren inte vill kännas vid.
