Den unge riddaren Erland Månesköld lever under medeltiden på släktens slott med sin mor Elfrida. Han möter den vackra zigenarflickan Singoalla, men hennes följe lämnar trakten. Erland kan inte glömma henne, men hans mor övertalar honom att gifta sig med Helena Ulfsax. Under bröllopsförberedelserna återvänder zigenarföljet till trakten och Erland och Singoalla möts på nytt. De känner båda att ingenting kan hindra deras kärlek.Singoalla var den allra dyraste filmen i svensk historia när den kom 1949, och placerar sig högt även i dag omräknat till dagens penningvärde. Med en inspelning som inkluderade det största kulissbygget på våra breddgrader (filmens slott), stora masscener och hundratals specialsydda dräkter hamnade kostnaden på ungefär åtta gånger mer än en normal svensk film. Viveca Lindfors gör en av sina paradroller som den varmblodiga, romska skönheten Singoalla, vars kärlek till den vackre riddaren Erland Månesköld är dömd ända från det första lustfyllda andetaget. Hugo Alfvén skrev musiken och den berömda boken som ligger till grund författades av Viktor Rydberg.
