En riktigt charmig roadmovie! När 7-åriga Olive, den yngsta medlemmen i familjen Hoover, mot alla odds blir uttagen att delta i en skönhetstävling i Kalifornien packar hela familjen ihop sig i deras rostiga nästan-fungerande Volkswagen-buss för att göra den 3 dagar långa resan genom USA så att Olive ska få chansen att uppfylla sin dröm! Det är pappa Richard, den ständige optimisten som utan större lycka försöker sälja in sitt 9-stegs-program till bokförlagen. Mamma Sheryl som gör sitt bästa för att hålla ihop familjen utan att själv bryta samman och tonårssonen Dwayne som avlagt ett tysthetslöfte. Med på resan är också Sheryls bror, en Proust-professor som efter en olycklig kärleksaffär med en manlig student försökt ta livet av sig och inte får lämnas ensam samt Richards heroin-snortande far som är så grov i munnen att han blivit utslängd från ålderdomshemmet! Och så lilla Olive själv! Det blir en hysteriskt rolig resa - åtminstone för oss tittare! Filmen belönades med 2 Oscar vid 2007 års gala - Alan Arkin för Bästa Manliga Biroll samt Bästa Originalmanus!
