Efter åratal av planering lyfter vätgasballongen Örnen från Spetsbergen den 11:e juli 1897. Målet för ingenjör Andrée och hans mannar är att komma först till Nordpolen och hissa den svenska fanan där ingen människa tidigare satt sin fot. Men redan tidigt tornar svårigheterna upp sig. Människans litenhet blir påfallande inför de mäktiga naturkrafterna och expeditionen blir en resa rakt mot döden, med Andrée som en härförare piskad av en vansinnig dröm att möjliggöra det omöjliga. Ingenjör Andrées luftfärd var 1982 den dyraste filmproduktionen i svensk historia. Inga pengar sparades för att bygga exakta kopior av verklighetens ballong och ballonghus. Spaltmil skrevs om hur inspelningen drabbades av både orkanvindar och skenande kostnader, men i slutändan fick vi en hyllad storfilm som många räknar bland svensk films främsta verk.
