Då vetenskapsmannen Bruce Banner utför ett standardexperiment går något fruktansvärt snett och hans kropp utsätts för en dödlig dos gammastrålning. Otroligt nog klarar han sig utan några allvarligare skador. Vad ingen vet är att inom honom har en ohygglig varelse väckts till liv. Det dröjer inte länge förrän doktor Banner börjar uppleva minnesluckor och känslan av att han har en främmande kraft inom sig. Hans minnesluckor döljer en förvandling av honom själv. När han förlorar kontrollen och raseriet frigörs, förvandlas han till den enormt starka och helt oslagbara varelsen Hulken. Banner behåller hemligheten för sig själv men hans före detta flickvän och tillika en duktig forskare, anar kopplingen mellan mannen och monstret. Då militären och Banners främste konkurrent, vetenskapsmannen Glenn Talbot, kopplas in gör hon allt för att förhindra att de kommer på doktor Banners hemlighet. Skulle de lyckas fånga och oskadliggöra Hulken får det även oanade konsekvenser för doktor Bruce Banner.
