I den lilla staden Whoville är invånarna en samling uppnästa, maniska julfirare som springer ner varandra i sin iver att konsumera, shoppa och pynta inför den kommande julen. Den ende som inte går igång på julbelysningar och giganstiska julgranar är den mytomspunna och fruktade Grinchen som bor utanför staden i en grotta. Han är grön och luden och hatar julen i sin ensamhet, medan han livnär sig på soporna från den konsumtionsrika lilla staden.
