En av filmhistoriens mest kända bilder är förmodligen när gubben i månen får ett rymdskepp i ögat. Filmen bakom bilden heter "Resan till månen" (1902) och skaparen gick under namnet Georges Méliès. Likt många filmer från den tidiga eran har Resan till månen legat skadad och gömd i många år, men nu finns filmen åter att skåda i dess originalglans – och dessutom i färg. Allt tack vare ett par ihärdiga filmälskare som vägrade ge upp.I dokumentären "En extraordinär resa" får vi följa detta envisa filmteam som gjort det omöjliga möjligt – att restaurera en kopia som i stort sett var färdig för kassering. Vi får följa den enastående filmens resa från produktion och premiär under det tidiga 1900-talet, till upptäckten av en nitratkopia i färg 1993 till nypremiären i Cannes 2011 när den färdigrestaurerade kopian visades för en lycklig publik. Dokumentären innehåller också intervjuer med ett antal kända och fantasifulla regissörer som har blivit formade av Méliès verk och inser vikten och storheten av dess återkomst, bland andra Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie från Montmartre) och Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).Resan till månen - Originalfilmen här i nyrestaurerad och handmålad version, med musik av legendariska franska electrobandet Air. I detta absolut första rymdäventyr får vi följa sex medlemmar från astronomiföreningen på en makalös expedition till månen. Där möter de bland annat himlavalvets invånare, jättelika svampar och såklart ogästvänliga utomjordingar som de lyckas undfly i sista sekunden. Och hemma väntar så klart parad, pompa och ståt!
