Från 1917 till 1945 var Torgny Segerstedt huvudredaktör för Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning (GHT). Han utmanade Tredje rikets ledare med sina kontroversiella åsikter. Vissa artiklar blev upplästa i engelsk radio samma dag som de publicerats och i Norge betraktade man honom som en hjälte. Den svenska kungen och regeringen blev oroliga för konsekvenserna. Sverige var neutralt och de ville till varje pris hålla landet utanför kriget. Men med pennan som enda vapen, tog Segerstedt upp striden. Hans kärleksliv var tumultartat. Han är i ständig konflikt med sig själv, och involverad samtidigt med tre olika kvinnor. Till sist tvingas han ta konsekvenserna av sina handlingar både politiskt och privat.
