Dokumentären kombinerar Ingmar Bergmans egna filmklipp och röstinspelningar, nyinspelade intervjuer med skådespelerskorna Harriet Andersson och Bibi Andersson, och en särskild introduktion av Martin Scorsese. I början av 50-talet skaffade sig Ingmar Bergman en filmkamera, en 9,5 mm Bell & Howell, som han ofta använde sig av både privat och i sitt arbete. Bilder från lekstugan bygger på dessa klipp och skapar ett rikt och varierande porträtt av en av de största filmskaparna genom tiderna. Bilder från regissörens vuxna lekplats åtföljs av hans egna kommentarer från olika intervjuer. Skådespelerskorna Harriet Andersson och Bibi Andersson - exponerade inför Bergmans kärleksfulla blick i dessa påkostade dokumentära sekvenser - bidrar även med levande och personliga inslag.
